Short introduction of the various vaccines are:
1. BCG: It is a good vaccine to fight against Tuberculosis. It helps in preventing severe forms of Tuberculosis. A single injection is given on the left shoulder. After 15 to 20 days. It is a compulsory vaccine in India.
2. Polio vaccine: It is a very good vaccine. With the help of this vaccine, we have eradicated Polio from India, but still it is prevalent in some parts of the world. There are 2 forms of the vaccine: oral and Injectable. Additional doses of this vaccine are given by the Government; each and every child below 5 years of age should be given.
3. Hepatitis B vaccine: It is a potent vaccine against a deadly disease of liver Hepatitis B. Three doses are given by various regimes. It is an Injectable vaccine with minimal side effects.
4. Pentavalent vaccine: In recent era, with the help of this vaccine, protection against 5 deadly diseases is given by a single prick. These diseases are: Diptheria, Pertusis, Tetanus, Hepatitis B and H.Influenza B. Two kinds of vaccines are available: one is Whole Cell Vaccine and the other is Acellular Pertusis Vaccine (commonly known as Painless vaccine).
There are chances of fever, pain, redness or swelling (and very rarely some other side effects) after giving whole cell vaccine. Paracetamol drops are given for 2 days after vaccination and ice application is advised for the swelling. These side effects are minimal with acellular pertusis vaccine.
Three doses are given at 6 weeks, 10 weeks and 14 weeks and a booster dose at 18 months.
5. MMR: It is a vaccine giving protection against 3 diseases namely: Measles, Mumps and Rubella. 2 doses are given at the age of 9 months and 15 months. It is relatively safe vaccine.
6. Chickenpox: It is a vaccine for the protection against chickenpox (Varicella infection). Two doses are given, one at 15 months and 5 years. It helps to prevent very severe form of chickenpox and its complications.
7. Hepatitis A vaccine: A single dose of Hepatitis A vaccine is given to prevent Heaptitis A disease. It is a safe vaccine which gives lifelong immunity. It has got minimal side effects.
8. Typhoid vaccine: Newer typhoid vaccine is a good vaccine at the age of 9 to 12 months. With older vaccine, booster doses at the interval of 3 months were required. Mild fever or headache may follow vaccination which is relieved by Paracetamol.
9. Flu vaccine: This vaccine helps to give protection against flu of various strains including H1N1 viruses. Yearly booster dose is required. Mild Flu like symptoms may follow vaccination. Relieved by rest and Paracetamol.
10. Pneumococcal Vaccine: Pneumococcus is a bacteria that causes some serious diseases like Pneumonia, Septicemia, Meningitis and Otitis media.
This is a safe vaccine for the protection against these diseases. It is safe, optional and a costly vaccine. Two types of vaccines are available in market.
11. Rotaviral vaccine: It is an oral vaccine which gives protection against severe form rotaviral gastroenteritis. Occasional vomiting or watery stools may follow vaccination. It does not give protection against Gastroenteritis from other viruses.
12. Other Optional vaccines: a few other optional vaccines are available like HPV vaccine, Meningococcal vaccine, Yellow fever vaccine, Japanese Encephalitis vaccine are available in the market. They can be given according to special indications after discussion with Pediatrician.
